What would #MartinLutherKing say about where we are? #MLKDay

Today (January 19th) honours the birthday of a man who paved the way for many and played an integral role in all of our lives.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a revolutionist who did all he could to make a difference.  In a world that feels unjust at times, we have to keep striving for a change. I’ve yet to see the movie Selma but I’ve heard people say it’s fitting as we are currently experience social unjust with the recent events.

I wonder if Dr. King was alive today, would he feel we’ve progressed or receded as a race? On one hand, I would think that seeing a black president would make him proud.  Not because President Obama is black, but because it shows the power of perseverance and the persistent need for change; people kept working to carry out his legacy of hope.

On the other hand, with senseless deaths of Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, Eric Garner and countless other nameless souls (whose story will never be told), these lives have been taken and justice was blinded by the laws that were put in place to protect the innocent.

This makes me question, how much progression has really occurred? How much have we as humans actually evolved?  Is it possible that history is just a series of reoccurring events which circles time?

On this day, as we commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s life, we (as a human race) need to be aware of where we’ve been and where we’re going to get to where we are destined to be.

Let’s work at being ‘the change’ that needs to happen.

2014 in review

I would like to thank everyone who reads my blog and for keeping me motivated.

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2014 annual report for this blog.

Here's an excerpt:

A San Francisco cable car holds 60 people. This blog was viewed about 650 times in 2014. If it were a cable car, it would take about 11 trips to carry that many people.

RIP @Joan_Rivers – You’ve made many laugh and shocked others but you always kept it real!

I just learned that Joan Rivers passed away today (September 4, 2014) at 81 years of age.

From news reports and being a fan over the years, it’s obvious that she lived a full life and though she was getting on in years she was always vibrant and seemed very strong.  This is just another example of how precious every moment of life really is.

The only reason I’m shocked is due to the fact that I just watched her last weekend on Fashion Police giving her  honest, often jaw dropping and hilarious opinions on the fashions from the Emmys and VMAs.  I was even commenting on how she had more energy than me.

Though the news saddens me as I can only imagine how she will be missed by her loved ones, I can only pray to spend the next 50 years of my life doing something that I love.

If you get a chance, read her story, it’s interesting how much she went through and endured to become one of the most well-known female comedians world-wide.

Here’s Joan at her recent appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.

WHAT?! @hellokitty is not a cat?

Ok, I know there’s a lot going on in the world today so this may not be a big deal to some (well, probably to anyone) but I just don’t get it.

Am I to understand that this beloved character who has pointed ears, apparent whiskers, a button nose, paws and a tail and whose name is KITTY, is in fact not a kitten nor cat?

Though I don’t feel this warrants the ‘Breaking News’ status I’ve noticed it’s been given on some notable news websites, it is somewhat shocking to hear.

So, if I have this story straight, Hello Kitty is a little girl with a hairy face and possibly elf like ears?  It just doesn’t make any sense.  But one thing I will say, it’s a great example of how ‘one should never assume anything’.

I just had to share this because now I’m questioning my childhood memories.  I mean, what is a Smurf anyways and I don’t recall ever seeing Strawberry Shortcake ever bake a cake.  Come to think of it, what was Rainbow Brite really up to? And why did Inspector Gadget get all the praise when Brain and Penny did all the work?

Well, such is life I guess.  It took 40 years to find out that Hello Kitty isn’t a cat, I wonder what the next 40 years will reveal?  Perhaps I’ll find out that Jem wasn’t truly outrageous? That can’t be true. I just don’t know.  Fade to Black.

Find ways to #motivate yourself everyday!

Stay motivated in everything that you do.

Always challenge yourself so you can keep evolving.

Evolution equals living.

If you’ve never failed then you’ve never lived.

Many great people failed yet achieved more than they imagined. That’s because their set backs were a set up for greatness!

True failure is when one stops trying. If you have strength and courage nothing can defeat you unless you let it. You have a choice.

@WordPress #WPChalllenge – Quick Story!!

Today’s wordpress challenge is to write anything which includes : a slice of cake, someone old and wise, a pair of flip flops.

True Story – I recently celebrated my birthday (July 18). I woke up that day feeling so-so…let me tell you why.

It’s crazy how powerful the mind is. This year I turned 39 but instead of thinking how I would celebrate my 39th year of life on the earth, I was consumed with the thought of ‘I’m almost 40’. I laid in my bed staring at the ceiling pondering what had I really done with my life to this point. I started to compare my accomplishments with my sister and my parents (whom I admire and look up to) and many people I know who are around the same age as me. Even those I don’t know like; Angelina Jolie, David Beckham, Posh Spice…the list goes on of course.

The worse thing in the world is to invest time (which is constantly ticking) thinking about things that either you can’t change or really doesn’t matter.

Nonetheless, I got up to start my day. As I went downstairs I saw a card on the table. A bday card from my Dad! (Quick note about my Dad, he’s an old and wise man who has a lot of experiences to share and strong and good advice to offer.) He was sitting in the kitchen so I thanked him for my card and was about to put on my favourite pair of flip flops to head out.

He calls to me and says ‘Kim…come here. I want to talk to you’. I was in a bit of a rush so I said ‘Dad, can you please give me the Coles notes version…I really have to head out’. He just looked at me and said ‘Kim, leave worrying for the dead. Give your problems and worries to the dead man and let him take care of them for you. Time is for the living, it’s the one thing that you can never get back or catch up on. Be wise with how you spend it’. My first thought was ‘that must sound better in a different language’ but then I really took in his words to understand what he was telling me.

His words hit me like a ton of bricks as I had just spent about 45mins thinking and worrying about turning 40 next year…something that’s not even promised.

He also said to me ‘You are powerful and you are blessed. You can do anything you put your mind to with God in your life…just believe!’ Profound words. I gave him a hug, let him know how much I love him and that he is the best father in the world.

I went to work feeling good and ready to enjoy the day. When I arrived to my desk my manager and coworkers hooked me up with prezzies. A good friend already had a slice of cake waiting for me at 9:00am! And my company’s president, a woman who, in my opinion, is one of the most powerful and strongest leaders in the world. And it’s not because she’s a female president but because she is an incredibly intelligent and driven individual who sets her sights high and ensures she challenges herself and others to surpass the highest heights. If you had the opportunity to meet her you would see she is truly a rare diamond that’s multi-faceted and illuminates brightly!

Needless to say, this year was one the best birthdays I’ve had in a while and I’m grateful for every moment and everyone in my life. (Good and not so Good times) I’m thankful for it all as the experiences have made me who I am and I like what I see when I look in the mirror. Love handles and all : )

I’d like to offer some advice from experiences I’ve had over the years.

My advice:

Opportunities. When they arise…take them. Your instinct will let you know instantly what you want or need to do. Trust it. Don’t think about it for too long, you may doubt your abilities and possibly talk yourself out of a good thing. If you try it and it doesn’t work out accept it as a lesson learned and move on. Don’t dwell on it unless you’re attempting it again and want to figure out how to do it differently.

Be courageous in every aspect of life. Your career, knowing your self-worth, honing and exposing your talents and gifts and most importantly..matters of the heart. Don’t be afraid love…no matter how many times things go wrong.

Forgive yourself and others. Don’t go into your future holding on to your past – the weight of the past will be like an anchor to your vessel. Release the anchor and move full speed ahead into the horizon. The choice is yours. Only you can make a change.

Communicate. This, by far is one of the most important (if not THE number one) action. In every situation speak your mind instead of ‘wishing you had’ when the opportunity presented itself. This is how the past gets heavy, ‘not speaking up’ becomes a regret and it ends up being a burden that the future has to deal with. In every area in your life….say what’s on your mind. You’ll lift the weight of uncertainty and fear off your shoulders allowing you to always walk tall with confidence in all you do in your life. My dad always said ‘don’t wait till your standing over my grave to talk to me.’ Tell me everything now so I can offer advice or so you can feel good knowing it’s been discussed.

Tell your loved ones you love them. Show them you appreciate and love them with all your heart. We all have a set time on the earth with no knowledge for how long. The most beautiful and expensive gift you could give anyone is your time. Spend time with those you love so good memories will follow you forever.

I can only speak from my own life experiences so though none of this has been ‘researched and verified’ I’ve lived through it and can only give you my take on this thing called ‘life’.

Be well. Live well. Always wear sunscreen.

This is great advice too: Baz Luhrmann – Everybody’s Free To Wear Sunscreen: http://youtu.be/sTJ7AzBIJoI

@DrMayaAngelou was such a positive influence – Her legacy will always live on!

Dr. Maya AngelouLast week we lost a beacon of light. Dr. Maya Angelou passed away on May 28, 2014 at the age of 86.

Her repertoire is lengthy and covers everything from writings and movies to civil rights movements and so much more. She’s shared the hardships of growing up in a world that often made people feel less than worthy. She was a pleasure to listen to and inspiring to read. Dr. Maya Angelou had a great impact on me. Her book “I know why the caged bird sings” was eye-opening and poignant.

As a child, I loved poetry. I still remember memorizing my first poem and the way it touched me. This is likely the reason why I love the book of psalms so much as most of them read like poetry to me.

I use to write a lot of poetry. A few months back I found my writings and marveled at how detailed and passionate I was at such a young age. I wrote about everything from hardships to happiness.

Today as I reflect on Dr. Angelou’s life, I can’t help to think about the power of influence.

We all fall victim to influence in one way or another. It’s how we allow ourselves to be influenced that says a lot about who we are and what we are capable of as an individual. It’s easy to be influenced to make what are considered ‘good choices’ such as; going to university/college, getting a job, live a healthy lifestyle, etc. With that said, it’s even easier to be influenced to make what are considered ‘bad choices’ like; giving into addictions, lying, cheating, etc.
Regardless of what the influence is, we all have to remember first and foremost, we have a choice. We can decide ‘what we truly want’ and we all have the ability to create and follow our own path.

If you ever have a negative feeling about a situation, listen to your instincts and do what you know is right for you. People will try to tell you what they think is a good choice but your heart knows what’s right. I’m not discounting being influenced, I’m simply saying, before making decisions and choices (good or bad), ask yourself, is this right for me? Is this decision my own or am I trying to please someone else? Is this choice in my best interest?
Trust yourself more than you would trust anyone else. Always believe in yourself and believe in your abilities. Know that you’re worth all that your heart desires.

As I remember the influence that Dr. Maya Angelou had on me, I can’t help but think of her infamous and stimulating poem – Phenomenal Woman. A true representation of how the power of influence is a personal decision.

RIP Dr. Angelou, your light will shine in the hearts and souls of many for years to come.

Phenomenal Woman
Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I’m not cute or built to suit a fashion model’s size
But when I start to tell them,
They think I’m telling lies.

I say,
It’s in the reach of my arms
The span of my hips,
The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

I walk into a room
Just as cool as you please,
And to a man,
The fellows stand or
Fall down on their knees.
Then they swarm around me,
A hive of honey bees.

I say,
It’s the fire in my eyes,
And the flash of my teeth,
The swing in my waist,
And the joy in my feet.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

Men themselves have wondered
What they see in me.
They try so much
But they can’t touch
My inner mystery.
When I try to show them
They say they still can’t see.

I say,
It’s in the arch of my back,
The sun of my smile,
The ride of my breasts,
The grace of my style.
I’m a woman

Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

Now you understand
Just why my head’s not bowed.
I don’t shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud.
When you see me passing
It ought to make you proud.

I say,
It’s in the click of my heels,
The bend of my hair,
the palm of my hand,
The need of my care,
‘Cause I’m a woman

Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

#30Day Challenges – I can do this…. @BrianTracy #Changeyourthinking #Changeyourlife is a great start!

Back in April I did a 30 day fitness challenge.  I made a point to be active for at least 30 mins a day for 30 days.  It was fantastic!  I actually exceeded my 30 mins on most days but the great thing was I made sure I was active every day.  The funny thing is, I did it for no other reason than to challenge myself.  I didn’t buy anything special as a reward or have a special night out.  I stayed focused and completed it and was so pleased with myself when I did!

May was a busy month so I didn’t continue with the challenge but I’m back at it in June.  Today is day 2 and feel stronger today than I ever have before.

Seeing how that was so successful, I’ve decided to challenge myself to do something that I love. Write.  My goal is to write every day for 30 days – no excuses.  My sister and her friend (who’s like a sister to me..Wendy) and countless others have motivated me to refocus my efforts and share my passion with others.

With that said, today’s entry is about Change.

As with most people in the world, there is often something in our lives that we would ‘change’ about ourselves or the way we live.  It could be trying to overcome an addiction or something as simple as changing the colour of your hair. It may seem like a difficult decision at first.  It may seem overwhelming when you think about all that needs to be done to make the change happen.  It’s easy to give up on trying to make the change but we have to remember, anything worth changing is worth the challenge.

Regardless of what needs to be done, we have the willpower and courage to overcome it or make the move.  Never second guess yourself and always trust your instincts.  Believe me when I say we are all capable of overcoming our fears.  Fear is just an emotion, it’s not physical. Fear is the enemy of change. Don’t let fear win, change is (often) a good thing.  When you commit to doing something different, and if the choice you make doesn’t take you where you want to go, stay strong, that means it’s only a stepping stone leading you to where you need to be.

Trust and believe in yourself as much as you do in others and you may be surprised how strong (mentally, physically, spiritually and/or emotionally) you truly are.

Need help on how to accept change? I suggest reading “Change your Thinking, Change your Life by Brian Tracy”, I found it to be helpful when learning how to open my mind to a new way of thinking.

Embrace change and you will find happiness within.  Happiness isn’t an end goal, it’s a part of the journey.

@Raptors is truly reppin ‘We the North’

So happy to see our #Toronto @Raptors making the city proud today! They just won Game 2 against Brooklyn Nets. (100-95)

Watch @iamrachelcrow – “l’d Rather Go Blind” – X Factor US…” on YouTube

This young girl is amazing!

So much power in her voice. It’s like you can feel her soul.

I’ve seen her sing on other videos but this one by far is the most touching.

This is a rising star to keep on the radar!

Rachel Crow – “l’d Rather Go Blind” – X Factor US…: http://youtu.be/d6OMwx4fuek

@PorticoCC made it a very #HappyEaster!

Yesterday at church the Pastor spoke of the resurrection of Christ. He delivered the message with an interesting outlook.

He spoke of Conspiracy Theories and how as humans we create a plausible conclusion when we’re presented with events that are mysterious to us.

He referred to the bible and spoke of how the elders and chief priests came up with a ‘believable story’ when the guards (that were to be watching the tomb that contained Jesus’ body) told them that an angel moved the huge boulder that blocking the tomb and Jesus walked away without them noticing.

As humans when something doesn’t make sense or seems too outrageous to be true, we create our own theories that make more sense. This makes us feel better when we have created a story as to what may have really happened. Those who know me will say I’m one of the biggest conspiracy theorists around but not on this one.

I’ve always believed in God and have strong faith in his purpose for me. I don’t preach as I believe everyone is entitled to their own beliefs and opinions.  I only wish people could be more understanding of other people’s beliefs, the world would definitely be more relaxed.

I believe we are all here for a reason and every person has a talent specific to them as an individual. We are all capable and able to see our purpose fulfilled. We need to believe in ourselves and in our talents. Have confidence in your inner-strength and you will always succeed.

Like the…

Like the unseen breeze that gently brushes your skin.

Like the rays of light that keep you warm.

Like the courage that pushes you to take a leap.

Like the trust that is built between souls.

Like the hope that is shared between hearts.

How do I know God loves me?

Because I have faith. Because I believe.

Let Your Creativity Flow! #Huey from #Boondocks is my first attempt!

I had such a strange dream last night. The only thing I remember is hearing a man say to me ‘let your creativity flow!’

I woke up as soon as I heard it and realized there’s much to do!

With that said, I was inspired to take a crack at drawing Huey from Boondocks. I’m working towards having my first children’s book illustrated…by me : )

image

Hope you like!

Wendy, I know you’re reading! : ) big hugs!

#Perseverance + #Courage – #Failure = #Success

We all know that working hard and staying focused will help make our dreams come true but very rarely does anyone speak of the struggle.

Could it be because if someone told you how hard you will have to work to make your dreams a reality would be discouraging?  Maybe.

Could it be because when you see how many obstacles are ahead when working towards the initial goal, it might make you want to give up? It’s possible.

Could the thought of failure overcome your hope of success? Perhaps.

I have no answers but I can share what I’ve experienced so far. I clearly see failure is a much needed sum in the equation of success. You need to know what doesn’t work to find out what does.

Think about how many people have gone through what you’re going through right now. Though you may feel like you’re ‘the only one’ going through a situation believe me, I can confidently say, You’re not alone.

Keep working towards your goals, accept and welcome ‘failures’ as part of the process. Allow failures to happen but be sure to continue subtracting them from your ‘end result’. By doing so, you will be on your way to the solution that will reveal your true success!

The destination is all about the journey. Stay courageous in all you do and remember if you fall, it’s ok. Just pick yourself up, dust yourself off and keep going.

You’ll be there before you know it and when you get there, you’ll look back and be happy that you started today!

@MrChuckD & #Public were ahead of their time… #StandYourGround is a Joke!

I’ve been a huge fan of #PublicEnemy for years and like their song “911 is a joke”, this “Stand Your Ground” law is a joke.

Though I may be far removed from it as thankfully we don’t have such a law in Canada, watching people literally get away with murder disgusts me.

Ignorance isn’t bliss.  It’s just ignorance.

I wrote this for all those who were ignorantly mistreated, beaten and killed with no regard to the content of their life.

Fruit of the Sycamore Tree.

What’s swinging over there in the breeze?
That’s the fruit of the Sycamore Tree.

Why does the fruit hang so low?
The shell of a man is a heavy load.

His body stretches like the branch of the tree.
Trying to reach out…trying to be free.

Free from hatred, anger and tribulation.

Free from the cowardice of a misguided nation.

The fruit of a sycamore tree is  bittersweet. Through anger it releases a soul of peace. – end

Today, the Sycamore tree is masked in this “Stand your Ground” law.  Young men are still being lynched.

Lynched by the laws of injustice.
